October 2009

Dear Members,

These are exciting times at Prestbury Tennis Club. The big news is that the replacement of the shale courts with an all-weather artificial clay surface gets underway next Monday October 19th. Obviously there will be some disruption but it will be business as usual on the other five courts. The contractors hope to finish just before Christmas. Prestbury will be the first club in the north-west of England to install these courts which are considered a better surface for developing young players, due to the slower higher bounce. We have received generous funding support from the LTA and Sport England to make this project possible.

Continuing the LTA theme, many congratulations to Jon Cain and Sean Sivewright for the recognition

received at the recent Cheshire LTA Awards evening which was richly deserved in both cases.

Our summer season recently drew to a close with the Handicap and Veteran Finals and Parents v Kids junior event followed by distribution of the end of season prizes and trophies. The September and October weather has been kind to us with lots of tennis being played by all ages. The floodlights mean that there is ample opportunity for everyone to keep going through the winter. If you

Once again we are asking all our members to take out British Tennis Membership if they have not already done so. It's very easy to do, there is no cost involved and, as well as increasing our Wimbledon ticket allocation, it will help the Club's standing with the LTA which is likely to be a positive when we are seeking further funding. Even if you see no direct benefit to yourself please do join and remember it's open to Junior as well as Adult members

At the end of September Prestbury was awarded Tennis Clubmark status by the LTA. Clubmark is a cross-sport quality accreditation programme. It provides a framework to help clubs develop and to ensure that programmes, policies and

procedures are in line with best practice. There has been a big effort on the part of our Head Coach Jon Cain and a number of Committee members to achieve this recognition which sets us apart from the majority of other tennis clubs.

PROJECT WORKS ON SITE

As mentioned in the Chairman’s letter, work will start on October 19th on the resurfacing works on the shale courts which have already been closed in preparation. This will inevitably cause some disruption but members should be able to access courts 7 and 8 by the usual route except at the times when vehicles are actually moving across the site. Assuming reasonable weather, it is expected that the project will be completed by Christmas.

The contractors will enter the club between the trees just after the clubhouse but before court 7, after crossing the field between the football goals and the playground. The entire route and courts 4-6 will be fenced off as will a storage area on the grass adjacent to the clubhouse. The area of the works is under the control of the contractors and will be out of bounds to members. We ask

The project will be supervised by specialist consultants with LTA accreditation. All health and safety aspects have been subject to expert review and recommendations.

The planned upgrade of the floodlights on 1-3 has unfortunately been delayed by the bureaucratic planning process, but it is hoped this will also be carried out before Christmas. In the meantime one lamp is not working on court 3, but it is not financially viable to replace individual bulbs.
