Just Out!                             July 2011

Dear Members

We are now well into the tennis season (as you can tell by the wonderful weather!) and I hope that members are making full use of the excellent tennis facilities.
I would like to remind people of some excellent opportunities for playing tennis and meeting new people down at the Club.

Club nights - Wednesday and Friday 6.30 -10pm

Men’s mornings – Sunday 10am-12.30pm

Ladies afternoon – Tuesday 1-2.30pm (coaching) followed by general play

Numbers are still a bit down on previous years and I would encourage everyone to consider trying it out. Everybody is very welcome to attend and all standards are catered for. Wednesday night has a facilitator so that everyone can be assured of good tennis and on Friday nights there is a BBQ every week, which runs through until October. These are great nights and a perfect way to end the week!

Lots of activity with club tournaments recently, with a very successful Junior Finals Day already taken place and the Club Championship well under-way. I would draw your attention to the upcoming Handicap Tournament and encourage you to consider entering this excellent event. With the handicapping system to even things out, it is something that all members can confidently compete in.

As always, we are keen to attract new members to the club. If you can think of any family, friends, neighbours or work colleagues who might be interested then, please, tell them about the club and persuade them to come along and see what we can offer.
Richard Sinton

CLUB TOURNAMENTS

Both the club championship and family cup events are now underway, but there is still time to enter the handicap event.

SQUASH MEMBERSHIP

For the forthcoming season the Squash Club is offering an introductory membership of £50 through to end Sept. 2012, a reduction of £105 on standard rates. Courts cost £4 for 44 minutes (£3 lower than local authority rates). Junior membership costs £10 for the year. For further information contact Roddy Mackay on mackay0011@yahoo.co.uk.

LADIES VETS TOURNAMENT

The Ladies Vets Tournament will be held on the same format as last year, as a one-day event, on Saturday 8th October at 1pm. The age is 45+. Just turn up on the day at 12.45pm. Refreshments available.

ON-LINE COURT BOOKING

The new on-line court booking system trial has now been in operation for a few weeks and has proved to be very popular and successful. The Committee will take a decision, in September, about whether to keep the system and, if so, to extend it to cover all 8 courts. If this does happen, then a better facility will be provided in the clubhouse to give access to the system.

If you have any views that you would like to be taken into account then, please, speak to a Committee member who will ensure these are considered during the discussion. (Contact details of key members are listed at the end and all Committee members are identified on the Committee noticeboard in the clubhouse.)

All user accounts were originally set up with a default password with a request that members change it to something else. There are a lot of people who have still not done this and they are asked to do so asap.

If anyone is having difficulty with the system or needs an account setting up, then please get in touch with either Jane Mackay or Richard Sinton.

MEMBERSHIP

There is a 10% discount available now for any new member joining the Club. Please tell friends, family and neighbours about the Club – higher membership numbers keep the subscriptions reasonable.

STOP PRESS – Wednesday 20th July from 6.30pm onwards there is a Rusty Rackets Open Evening with the Head Coach, Jon Cain. It’s an opportunity for any potential new member to come and have a hit.

SHOETAGS

It’s important that we can check that all those using our facilities are members. Parents are asked therefore to ensure that juniors are wearing their shoetags whenever possible and, if not wearing them, at least carrying them whilst at the club, as they may be approached and asked to produce them.

BALL MACHINE

Free to all members. Feedback on the use of the machine is excellent. If you want to have fun as a family, practice in between lessons or just have a more fun way of using the courts, then you must try the Club’s new ball machine.

Unplug if from the charger, wheel it to any court and you are ready to practise. Balls are already in the hopper for you. It’s very easy to use by turning a few knobs to get topspin, backspin, up to 80 mph left and right and can even do lobs. Full instructions are with the machine, along with a few standard settings to try first.

It’s free to all members but a senior must be present if used by junior members. You can’t use it in the wet.

It’s kept in the Boiler Room for convenience, which is the black door by the junior noticeboard. The key is kept in the cupboard to the right of the drinks machine in the clubhouse.

FUNDRAISERS

Functions organised this year to raise funds towards Clubhouse refurbishment have raised over £500. The Ladies Night was a great success and a repeat is planned for later in the year. Thanks to all those who supported the Race Night, a new venture for the Club’s social scene. A special Clubnight before the Royal Wedding and team social events have all helped too.

CLUB CLOTHING

Prestbury Tennis Club children’s tennis hoodies will be available to buy on Friday 22 July at Junior Clubnight and BBQ - cost £15.

Profits from the clothing sales will be available for the Junior Section to help finance some of their activities.

CLUB KEYS

Lost your key to the gate and clubhouse? Don’t run the risk of being locked out for your game. Replacement keys can be obtained from the Membership Secretary, Judith Hewitt, at a cost of £4. If your key is damaged and won’t work, you can return it to Judith for a free replacement.

COURT AVAILABILITY

When six courts are in use, eg for Summer Camps, Prestbury Open Tournament, Courts 7 and 8 will be bookable.

CLUBHOUSE TELEPHONE

With the advent of the mobile phone, the payphone in the clubhouse was rarely used for outgoing calls and its rental charge was much higher than the income. The opportunity has therefore been taken to install a telephone which will not make outgoing calls except to the emergency number 999 – it is in the first-aid corner by the vending machines.

BRITISH TENNIS MEMBERSHIP

Thanks to those members who have become British Tennis Members. This has enhanced the number of Wimbledon tickets allocated to our Club. If you’ve not already done so, please do as it will help our members get more tickets next year.

It’s free to join – adult or junior – tel.0845 873 7202 or www.lta.org.uk/membership.

COURT BOOKING

There is a lot of pressure on court availability at certain times during the week and there have been numerous occasions where courts have been booked but not used. As you can imagine, this is very frustrating for other users. It would be very helpful if members could observe the following, please:

  • Only book a court if you are fairly certain of using it

  • If you find you will not be using a court then cancel it as soon as possible

  • Include your surname on the sheet when making a booking
